The Digital age disturbs our ability to concentrate
Digital media expose us to a mass of information every day. When we move around on the internet, we are usually confronted with a lot of information at the same time. The American technology philosopher Nicolas Carr confirms that our digital world has developed further and further in a very short time. However, our brain is still the same as it was a thousand years ago. We humans are not made to take in multiple pieces of information at the same time.
In this context, it is possible for our brain to adapt to new challenges and process multiple pieces of information at the same time. However, there is a limited capacity here. In the long run, the switch leads to a decrease in our ability to focus strongly on one thing at a time. Some scientists even hypothesize that we will become less able to understand complex issues.
A current study shows a connection between multitasking in the media field and behavioral problems in the school child age. This can be seen above all in constant attention problems.
We can improve our concentration level again
Bastian Willenborg, a specialist in psychosomatic medicine, psychiatry and psychotherapy, shows ways to counteract the negative consequences of the digital transformation. Once our ability to concentrate has waned, it doesn’t
have to stay that way. One very effective method is to learn a new juggling utensil. In addition, the time we would actually spend with digital media is used to train the juggling utensil.
